The Snowdrop Sisters

The Snowdrop Sisters | three dolls by Atelier Björkåsa

When the brighter days are on their way
It is time to tidy up the greenhouse
As every year I clean the windows, empty pots with dry soil
Oil the secateurs and count flower seeds

And as every year, the Snowdrop Sisters
Sit under the potting table
Bleary-eyed, with tousled hair
Still half asleep

Get ready, I say. Spring will be here before you know it

The Snowdrop Sisters | three dolls by Atelier BjörkåsaAnd as every year, all I can hear
Is a loud yawn, under the potting bench
Where the Snowdrop Sisters sit
In their green pyjamas

And while I clean the windows, empty pots with dry soil
Oil the secateurs and fill the watering can
They stretch their little arms and bend their chubby knees
And rub a long winter’s sleep out of their eyes

Get ready, I say (once more, just to make sure)
Spring will be here before you know it

And as every year, all I can hear
Is a snigger, while they climb up
Hand over hand, over the bags with compost
Onto the potting bench

And while I clean the windows, empty pots with dry soil
Oil the secateurs and wind up the gardening line
They put on their white hats and play hide and seek
Between last year’s pelargoniums

And as every year, I can hear myself say
This time with a very firm voice
Get your dresses on and be quick!
Spring will be here before you know it

And while I clean the windows, empty pots with dry soil
Oil the secateurs and dust the shelves
They stand with chattering teeth, shivering with cold
In their undies and reach for their clothes

The Snowdrop Sisters | three dolls by Atelier BjörkåsaThe Snowdrop Sisters | three dolls by Atelier BjörkåsaThe Snowdrop Sisters | three dolls by Atelier Björkåsa

They huff and wheeze…

They puff and sneeze…

And by the time I have tidied up the greenhouse
Cleaned the windows, emptied pots with dry soil
Oiled the secateurs and counted flower seeds
Filled the watering can, wound up the gardening line
And dusted the shelves

They all wear their white dresses, finally

I stand at the potting bench, bleary-eyed, with tousled hair
Tired after a long day in the greenhouse
When as every year, in this very moment
It starts to snow. Again.

First a little bit. Then a little bit more.
Until the garden is covered in a white blanket.

The Snowdrop Sisters press their little noses against the windows
Don’t worry, they say, spring will be here before you know it

The Snowdrop Sisters are looking each for a new home tomorrow, 25th of February at 07 p.m. EDT in my webshop.

Despite their difference in age (a few days, as it is common for snowdrops) they all stand 17″/ 43cm tall. Each of them has a needlefelted head and embroidered facial features, the rosy cheeks have been coloured with beeswax. Their bodies are firmly stuffed with clean carded wool and made with much love and care. They have a little bum, a bellybutton, shaped elbows and knees. The hair is made from doll mohair, the wigs can easily be styled with a soft brush or fingers. All clothes as well as the dolls themselves can be handwashed and laid flat to dry.

The Snowdrop Sisters will travel to their new families with two sets of clothes each (pyjamas and a dress and a snowdrop hat, undies and shoes) as well as a little flower bulb bag for wee treasures to hide in (you can spot the little bag in the 14th photo in this post). As all my dolls, they will be shipped with care instructions, a repair kit and a lavender sachet.

I am about to update the three listings in my webshop and keep my fingers crossed tomorrow for those of you who want to offer one of the Snowdrops a warm and loving home.

Sending you snowy greetings from Björkåsa (where I in fact dream of a greenhouse to grow cucumbers and to overwinter my pelargoniums in)

Thank you so much for your kind words, dear Els.

Thank you, dear Arianne. It is the work on details that makes up the many tiring hours stuffing limbs and crocheting wigs for me ;-)

  1. What? You ask for 10000 swedish crowns for a doll? This is crazy.

    • Juliane

I am fully cognizant of the fact that this is a lot of money and most people (including myself) aren’t able to purchase a doll at that price. However, let me briefly clarify how I calculate: About half of the amount goes to taxes and social fees. I have to cover expenses for high-quality/ organic material as well as for any expenses that come with a business, fees for webspace, insurance, camera equipment, courses etc. The remaining amount is my profit which corresponds roughly to a minimum hourly wage given the many hours of labour that go into a handmade doll. If I would charge only 1000 SEK per doll (and even that amount would still upset quite a few people) it wouldn’t be enough to pay for the tea that I sip while I work, let alone cover my expenses.

Thank you so much for bringing up this issue, I hope the above explains how we as crafters need to calculate in order to offer high-quality handmade products.

      Warmly,

      Juliane

  2. Hi Juliane I fully support your pricing for your beautiful, quality handmade dolls. You shouldn’t have to justify your pricing but there will always be people who don’t understand how long it takes to make a quality item. I am looking to start selling my dolls and have been told to stand firm on pricing as there is no way I could even afford to buy the materials to make them. I look forward to seeing more of tour outstanding work. Kelly x

    • Juliane

Thank you so much for your kind lines, dear Kelly. Pricing is a delicate subject and each crafter has their own reasons why they ask for this or for that price. You do right in standing firm on what you ask for your dolls. I was naive in the beginning and thought that since I got faster on making a doll, I could eventually earn more per hour (at the same price, but with less labour). The opposite was the case because I became more and more skilled and even though I am now faster on crocheting wigs, I spend more time on making garments or doing the face, so the amount of labour has tripled since I started and with that came a rise in price, too…

All the best for your creative journey!

  3. Vilka underbara dockor och vilka fantastiska bilder!!!! 😍

  6. Your work is amazing!
Beautiful dolls and beautiful photos, so full of life.
The price conversation is a difficult but really important one when it comes to handcrafted, high quality products. Thank you so much for kindly showing us a glimpse of the behind the scenes, and sharing with us how much work lies behind these dolls. It is really eye-opening.
I hope these lovelies will find good homes.

    • Juliane

Dear Marion, thank you so much. Yes, pricing is a sensitive subject, but I am glad that someone asked so that I had the chance to clarify. Thank you for your encouraging and kind comment, it really means a lot to me that you enjoy reading my posts and seeing my work.

  7. Oh, they sold so quickly, congratulations! I was curious and took a look at the time of the upload but by then they were already sold. Your work is amazing and as others said here, worth every penny. No wonder that they all found a new home so fast <3

    • Juliane

Thank you, dear Irene. I am happy that they found new homes so quickly and that so many people fell in love with the Snowdrop Sisters.
