The Highest Trees

Kiki, a cloth doll by Atelier Björkåsa

You shouldn’t climb about in a skirt
I say, from below, under the old oak tree

One shouldn’t climb about in a skirt?
Says who, aunt Ellinor? Kiki gasps
Six feet above the ground

And I answer with a nod
Although I am not quite sure
If Kiki can see me at all
Under the old oak tree

Pish-posh, Kiki says
Go tell aunt Ellinor, there is nothing better
Than climbing about in the trees
Wearing a skirt, just so she knows

And I answer with a nod
Although I am not quite sure
If Kiki can see me at all
Under the old oak tree

Kiki, a cloth doll by Atelier BjörkåsaHave you ever tried to use
A pair of trousers
As a parachute? Kiki says
And climbs a little higher up in the tree

That wouldn’t work, I say
Although I am not quite sure
If Kiki can hear me at all
From below, under the old oak tree

A skirt makes the best parachute, Kiki gasps
eight feet above the ground

And have you ever tried to build
A slide down a tree trunk
With a pair of trousers? Kiki says
And climbs a little higher up in the tree

That is… impossible, I say
Although I am not quite sure
If Kiki can hear me at all
From below, under the old oak tree

Well, try it with a skirt, Kiki gasps
Ten feet above the ground

And have you ever tried to use
A pair of trousers as a sail
To glide from tree top to tree top? Kiki says
And climbs a little higher up in the oak

How would that ever work? I say
Although I am not quite sure
If Kiki can hear me at all
From below, under the old oak tree

Use a skirt as a sail, fool-proof! Kiki gasps
Twenty-five feet above the ground

Ties the rope around a branch
And there she sits, in the evening sun
Nibbles at a biscuit and wiggles her toes, quite content

When I walk back home, I really wonder
If aunt Ellinor ever has tried
To climb up a tree in a skirt
Seems so much more useful than a pair of trousers, if you ask me

[It is International Women’s Day today – and no matter what kind of garments you choose to wear, remember that we all can still climb so much higher]

  1. Danke!

  3. Dear Kiki, how much I have missed you and your funny stories! I could sit for hours and look at the pictures and dream myself away. Thank you for all the joy you spread and for your smart points on how to approach life and the highest trees. We could all need a little bit of Kiki wisdom in our lives.
