Every Morning at Dawn (Della Aurora)

While the house is quiet
And everyone still is asleep
I stand by the kitchen window
And watch her from afar

Every morning at dawn
When the swallows start with their song
And the dark clouds lift over the hills
She walks through the meadows, towards our house

Puts on a night-blue dress
Under the old chestnut tree
Slips into a dark red coat
Behind lupines and cow parsley

Every morning at dawn
When the first song thrush can be heard
And wafts of mist hang over the field
She sits under the lilac bushes

Puts on a light-blue shirt
Then a delicate pink skirt
And combs her hair with three hazel twigs

Every morning at dawn
When the cuckoo joins in
And so does the robin
She takes a stroll through the garden

Takes a bath in the old rain barrel
Well hidden between
The dark green leaves of the water lilies
Before she slips into a gossamer dress

Every morning at dawn
When the chiffchaff starts to sing
She covers her hair with a light pink cloth
And puts on a pair of golden shoes

Walks along the flower beds first
Past the roses and the compost heap
Along the lilac bushes
Through the woodland, up the hill

And every morning at dawn
When the greenfinch finally is awake
The last dress she puts on
Is the one in a sunny yellow

While the house is still quiet
Three moments before everyone else becomes awake
I stand by the kitchen window
And watch her from afar

A new day, Della Aurora

Della Aurora is a 17″/ 45cm tall cloth doll, available in my webshop today, 4th of June 2017 at 18:00 EDT. She  has a needlefelted head and embroidered facial features. The rosy cheeks have been coloured with beeswax. Her body has been firmly stuffed with clean carded wool and made with much love and care. She has a little bum, a bellybutton, shaped elbows and knees. The hair is made from doll mohair, the wig can easily be styled with a soft brush or fingers.

All clothes as well as the doll itself can be handwashed and laid flat to dry. Della Aurora will travel to her new family with several sets of clothes (eighteen pieces) plus accessories – a nightgown, a dark blue jersey dress with matching leggings, two pair of undies, two pair of shoes (light blue and yellow), a dark red coat, a berry-red apron, a tulle skirt made from vintage silk, a light-blue jersey dress with matching leggings, a little necklace with felted beads, two hairclips, a dusty-pink headscarf, a mustard-yellow shirt, light-pink leggings and a sunny yellow cotton bastiste dress. As all my dolls, Della Aurora will be shipped together with a matching tote bag, care instructions, a repair kit and a lavender sachet.

About the name Della Aurora: In 2003, I attended a further education programme for puppeteers and object theatre artists in Estonia and in Denmark. Part of our studies was to work with the Hávamál poem, which is part of Edda, an Old Norse collection of writings from the 13th century. In this poem (as well as in other scriptures in Norse mythology), Dellingr is described as the god of the dawn, which is why I decided to name this little character Della. As second name, I have chosen Aurora, which is the Latin word for dawn and the name of the goddess of dawn in Roman mythology.

If you want open your home Della Aurora, you can find her in my webshop tonight at 18:00 EDT (which is at midnight CET) as well as five sets of doll clothes that fit 17″ dolls.

Thank you so much for supporting my creative journey.

Warmly, Juliane

[I was a bit hesitant to post Della Aurora’s story today and to continue with business as usual after I had heard the tragic news yesterday late in the evening. A lot of darkness, but there is light, every morning anew]
